Temporary Protected Status

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a program that offers sanctuary to individuals from countries experiencing conflict or catastrophe. TPS allows individuals from these countries to legally reside and work in the United States for a prescribed period of time, usually 18 months. The Department of Homeland Security sometimes extends a TPS period; other times, it re-designates a country for TPS.

Eligibility Requirements

You must be physically present in the United States to apply for TPS. Additionally, you must be a citizen of a TPS-designated country and have entered the United States by a certain date.

Limitations of TPS

Temporary Protected Status does not provide individuals with a pathway to permanent residence or citizenship.
